Liturgical Ministry

Students serve in all parts of the Mass at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center. From choirs to lectors, from ushers to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and from sacristans to altar servers, Catholic Illini serve alongside the priests of SJCNC to serve the thousands of fellow Catholic Illini students who worship and pray at St. John’s each week.

Sacristans

Sacristans run the show. Sacristans make sure that the Chapel is ready to celebrate the Mass: setting up for the Mass; keeping the Chapel beautiful; and scheduling, organizing, and training other student liturgical ministers.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the Word of God at Mass, specifically the readings that precede the Gospel.

Extraordinary Minister

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion distribute Holy Communion during the Mass. Because of the sacredness of this role, additional special training is required under the supervision of the Head Sacristan.

Ushers

Ushers provide assistance during Mass, greet Catholic Illini and visitors, and assist with collection.

Altar Servers

Altar Servers assist the priest during the Mass and at the altar.
