Catholic Illini choirs and musicians have been turning heads for years. With 4 different choirs featuring 4 different liturgical music styles, there are countless ways to lend your voice to the unique beauty of Mass at St. John’s Chapel.

The 5:00 PM Sunday choir seeks to offer a more contemporary “praise and worship” style of music along with classic and memorable church songs, all in the context of the sacred liturgy handed down by the Church. The music is often guitar-driven, but other musicians are welcome as well. Contact Director Hannah Thompsen for more information.
The 9:00 PM Sunday choir draws from an eclectic repertoire ranging from contemporary repertoire to Latin chant. It occupies a special place as it ministers during the 9:00 PM candlelight Mass, lending itself to a more contemplative ambiance. Singers as well as instrumentalists are encouraged to share their gifts with the choir. Rehearsals are held in the Choir Loft on Sundays from 8:00-8:45 PM. Contact Director Monika Nevarez for more information.
The Schola Cantorum at St. John’s is dedicated to perpetuating the chant tradition of the Catholic Church. The Schola focuses on vernacular and Gregorian chant of the Latin rite and incorporates a systematic way of learning to sing this historic style. The Schola Cantorum regularly sings at the 5pm Mass on Tuesdays throughout the year. We meet for rehearsal before Mass at 4:00 PM in the St. Cecilia Choir room. Contact the director, Heath Morber, at heath.morber@sjcnc.org for more information.
