Catholic Illini choirs and musicians have been turning heads for years. With 5 different choirs featuring 5 different liturgical music styles, there are countless ways to lend your voice to the unique beauty of Mass at St. John’s Chapel.

ChoirThe 5:00 PM Saturday Vigil choir seeks both singers and instrumentalists to perform songs in various styles of music in order to complement prayer and promote congregational participation.  String, woodwind, and brass instrumentalists are welcome.  Rehearsals are 6:15-7:15 PM Thursday evenings and 3:45-4:45 PM Saturday afternoons in the St. Cecilia Choir room.  Contact Director Kelly Sharpe for more information.
ChoirThe 10:30 AM Sunday choir has a commitment to singing quality music in a traditional style, drawing from the rich treasury of sacred music that the Church has fostered throughout its history.  The types of music that the choir performs include organ-based hymnody, Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony and anthems from the English tradition.  Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:30 PM and 9:30-10:15 AM Sunday morning, both in the choir loft.  Contact Director Heath Morber for more information.

The 5:00 PM Sunday choir seeks to offer a more contemporary “praise and worship” style of music along with classic and memorable church songs, all in the context of the sacred liturgy handed down by the Church.  The music is often guitar-driven, but other musicians are welcome as well.  Rehearsals are held in the choir loft on Sundays from 3:45-5:00 PM. Contact Director Grace Fink for more information.

The 9:00 PM Sunday choir draws from an eclectic repertoire ranging from contemporary repertoire to Latin chant.  It occupies a special place as it ministers during the 9:00 PM candlelight Mass, lending itself to a more contemplative ambiance.  Singers as well as instrumentalists are encouraged to share their gifts with the choir.  Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 PM in the Choir Loft and Sundays, 8:00-8:45 PM in the St. Cecilia Choir Room.  Contact Director Kimmie Volkman for more information.
The Schola Cantorum at St. John’s is an ensemble dedicated to perpetuating the ancient musical tradition of the Catholic Church.  The Schola focuses on the Gregorian chant of the Latin rite and incorporates a systematic way of learning to sing this historic style.  The Schola Cantorum regularly sings at the 5 PM  Mass on Tuesdays throughout the year.  We meet for rehearsal before Mass at 4:00 PM in the St. Cecilia Choir room. Contact Director Heath Morber for more information.
