Prospective Residents 

Does financial aid apply towards Newman Hall expenses?
Yes. Since Newman's first payment is due before financial aid is disbursed, Newman will accept a payment of $500.00 if a copy of the financial aid award letter is provided. The remainder of the first installment will be due when you receive your financial aid. 

What meal plans does Newman Hall offer?
We offer 14 meals per week or 20 meals per week. Freshman are required to puchase the 20 meals per week plan. Our meal plans are included in our room and board fees. Our meal plans only includes meals in the Newman Dining Room. 

When is the Newman Dining Room open?

Sunday Brunch:  11:00AM- 2:00PM
Breakfast: 6:45AM-10:00AM Everyday
Lunch: 11AM- 1:45PM Monday-Saturday
Dinner: 4:45PM- 7:00PM Monday-Saturday

How are roommates assigned?

For the 2010-2011 academic year students are choosing their rooms and roommates.  If you receive a contract you will receive login information for our online system and directions to complete this process.
 
Who can live at Newman residences?
Any UIUC or Parkland College student is eligible to live in Newman residences, although preference is given to UIUC students. Newman residences are certified by the University to house Freshmen. 

What if I need to cancel my contract?

The Room and Board Contract explains the circumstances and provisions under which residents may cancel their contract. Please contact the Newman Hall Office to discuss.

What if I have already signed a contract to live in the University Residence Halls and would like to move to Newman Hall?
Newman Hall has an agreement with the University that allows residents to cancel their University contract if they choose to live at Newman Hall. If you are considering switching from University Housing to Newman Hall, please contact the Hall Office for more information. 

Can I request a specific roommate?
Yes. If you wish to be roommates with a certain person, you need to indicate this on your Newman Hall application. Newman Hall will only honor mutual roommate requests. Both residents must make a request in writing. If you do not request a roommate on your application, you may submit a written request to the Hall Office. 


Do you have single semester contracts?

Yes.   We allow single semester contracts for specific reasons.  Students will be released from their contract if they are leaving because of graduation, study abroad, student teaching, United States military service, marriage, and internships.  Students must provide documentation to the hall office to be considered for a one semester contract.

What does the Housekeeping Service include?
Our Housekeeping Staff will clean your room twice a month. The housekeepers will take out the trash, clean the sink and mirror, vacuum, and do light dusting. In the North building they will also clean the bathrooms.  Housekeepers do not pick up or move residents' personal items while cleaning the room. They will also provide cleans sheets every other week if residents use Newman sheets. 

Are refrigerators allowed in the rooms?
Yes. Newman Hall partners with Collegiate Marketing to rent MicroFridges to students. The unit has 2.9 cubic feet total storage capacity, including a full freezer, and a 600 watt microwave. Students may preorder their fridge and have it delivered to their room before move-in. MicroFridges may be rented after students move-in, but quantities will be limited.To place your order today, visit www.collegiatefridge.com.

Is there parking available at Newman Hall?
Yes. Newman Hall has a limited number of parking spots available. Students may lease these spots through the Hall Office. Returning residents will receive priority in parking spots.

Are the rooms air-conditioned?
Yes. Each room in the North Building has central A/C. Rooms in the South Building have window A/C units.  

How can I schedule a tour of Newman Hall?
Tours are normally scheduled daily at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  If you plan to tour at these times it is not necessary to call in advance.  If you would like to arrange a tour at another time please call the Hall Office at (217) 344-1266 to schedule a tour.

Current Residents 

What size are the beds?
The beds are extra long twin. Clean sheets will be provided every other week by the housekeeping staff, but you may bring your own if you wish. 

When are Newman Hall's visiting hours?

Opposite-gendered guests of Newman residents may visit between 9:00AM and 1:00AM the following day. Early Saturday and Sunday morning, guests are permitted until 2:00AM. Overnight guests are not permitted in rooms occupied by the opposite gender. Overnight guests of the same gender are permitted but the resident must notify his/her RA. 

What size area rug will fit in the rooms?
Area rugs measuring 6' by 8' or smaller will fit. 

What should I do if I have a maintenance request?
Please go here to submit a work order. 

Are the rooms air-conditioned?
Yes. Each room is furnished with a window air conditioner. The fee is included in the room and board rate. 

What should I use to hang posters on the wall?
3M Strips are to be used in the South Building and thumbtacks in the North Building. Tape and adhesives are not permitted in both buildings.

What should I do if I lose money in the laundry?
Report it to the Newman Hall Front Desk and you will be issued a refund. 

When is the Newman Hall Dining Room open?

What should I do if my Internet connection is not working?

Use your Newman Hall User ID and Password in the computer lab and send an email explaining your concern. 

Who can help me with my general computer problems?
Currently Newman Hall does not offer computer consulting services. However, the University of Illinois offers free phone-based consulting through the CITES Help Desk at (217) 244-7000. They also offer onsite consulting services for $40 per hour. You may visit the CITES Help Desk's webpage at www.cites.uiuc.edu/help for more information. 

Can my guest park in the Newman Hall parking lot?
We do not have guest parking available, as the lot is completly reserved. 

Who can answer my questions regarding life at Newman or the University?
Your RA is a great resource regarding both life at Newman and at the University, from classes to fun activities, so get to know your RA. You can also stop by the front desk. 

When does U.S. Mail arrive?
There is not a set time. It can arrive anytime between 12 and 5PM. If you have outgoing mail you can drop it off at the Hall Office, or there is a USPS mailbox in front of St. John's Chapel facing Armory Avenue that is picked up at 2:00PM Monday through Friday and 12:00PM on Saturday. If you receive a package the office staff will place a package slip in your mailbox. You may pick up packages at the Hall Office. You will be required to sign for your packages. 


Can I send or receive faxes at the Hall Office?

Yes, residents are allowed to send faxes for $1.00 per fax. There is no charge to receive faxes. The Hall Office fax number is (217) 344-4957.
