COVID-related policies at Newman Hall have been developed in accordance with University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department (CUPHD) requirements for testing, quarantine, and isolation.

Below are highlights related to how CUPHD requirements for isolation and quarantine of individuals will be implemented at Newman Hall. In particular, please note that the requirements for appropriate isolation and quarantine space as well as the requirements for length of time are mandated by CUPHD.

Quarantine & Isolation Policies at Newman Hall

  • Residents who receive either a positive test result for COVID-19 or receive notice from contact tracing personnel that they have been exposed to COVID-19 must inform Newman Hall immediately upon such notice so that Newman Hall staff can take immediate steps to properly disinfect and sanitize Newman Hall for the health and safety of residents and to arrange for proper isolation or quarantine space that meets CUPHD guidelines for such spaces.
  • Residents who receive a confirmed positive test for COVID-19 will be required to isolate for 10 days or until such time as CUPHD informs them of their release from quarantine.
    • In all cases, residents who need to isolate will need to move from their room space to a designated isolation space.
    • Roommates, suitemates, and/or residents sharing an adjoining North Private Single bathroom of residents who receive confirmed positive test for COVID-19 will be required to quarantine for 14 days. The quarantine requirement and timeframe is mandated by CUPHD and the University of Illinois and can not be altered by Newman Hall.
  • Residents who are informed by the University of Illinois or other public health entities that they have been exposed to someone else who has received a positive test for COVID-19 will be required to quarantine for 14 days. The quarantine requirement and timeframe is mandated by CUPHD and can not be altered by Newman Hall.
    • Depending on individual circumstance, in some cases residents of Newman Hall North will be able to quarantine in their own room/suites. Residents of Newman Hall South will not be able to quarantine/isolate in their own room/suite because of the use of communal bathroom facilities.
  • Newman Hall has limited isolation and quarantine space available on-site for Newman Hall residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Newman Hall isolation and quarantine space meets all CUPHD guidelines for such housing. Additional off-site quarantine space will be contracted as need arises on a shared-cost basis.
    • Residents who are placed in in-house isolation/quarantine spaces may not leave the isolation/quarantine space and enter any other interior or exterior area of Newman Hall until such time as they have been released from quarantine/isolation by CUPHD except for the following approved reasons ONLY:
      • CUPHD has indicated that students in quarantine may level their quarantine space on Day 5 to take a COVID test. When leaving to take a test, the quarantined resident may only go to take the test and immediately return.
      • Fire alarm
      • Tornado siren
    • Failure to abide by isolation/quarantine restrictions within Newman Hall will result in immediate removal from the facility and immediate contract cancellation with no refund.
  • Residents who are placed in in-house isolation/quarantine spaces may not leave the isolation/quarantine space and enter any other area of Newman Hall until such time as they have been released from quarantine/isolation by CUPHD. Failure to abide by isolation/quarantine restrictions within Newman Hall will result in immediate removal from the facility and immediate contract cancellation with no refund and immediate referral to the University for disciplinary action including possible suspension or expulsion from the University.
    • Residents placed in isolation/quarantine spaces may not have any visitors. Failure to abide by isolation/quarantine restrictions within Newman Hall will result in immediate removal from the facility and immediate contract cancellation with no refund and immediate referral to the University for disciplinary action including possible suspension or expulsion from the University.
    • Newman Hall residents who enter or visit any occupied isolation or quarantine space will face disciplinary action up to and including immediate removal from the facility and immediate contract cancellation with no refund and immediate referral to the University for disciplinary action including possible suspension or expulsion from the University.
      • In addition, Newman Hall residents who have any contact with any person known to them to have received a positive COVID result or to have been placed under quarantine because of exposure to a positive COVID result will be referred to the University for disciplinary action.
  • Additional off-site quarantine space will be contracted as need arises. Newman Hall will pay for 50% of the cost for off-site isolation/quarantine space for residents who are not able to return to their permanent home; residents will be responsible for the remaining 50% cost of off-site isolation/quarantine space.
    • Residents who are in quarantine or isolation in in-house or in contracted off-site facilities will receive meal deliveries from Newman Hall during the time that they are in quarantine/isolation. Quarantine & isolation spaces in Newman Hall include bedding, towels, toiletries, housekeeping supplies (e.g., toilet paper), and a minifridge & microwave.
